How exercise physiology supports people with ASD
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) affects each person differently, but many individuals share challenges with motor coordination, sensory processing, executive function and social participation. Exercise physiology addresses these through structured, individualised exercise programs that build capacity across multiple domains simultaneously.
- Motor skill development — improving coordination, balance, body awareness and movement efficiency
- Sensory regulation — structured physical activity provides predictable sensory input that many people with ASD find regulating
- Behaviour and emotional regulation — regular aerobic exercise is one of the most evidence-based interventions for reducing challenging behaviours and improving mood in ASD
- Cardiovascular and metabolic health — people with ASD have higher rates of obesity, cardiovascular risk and metabolic conditions that exercise directly addresses
- Social skills and community participation — structured exercise in community settings builds confidence and social skills in a low-pressure environment
- Sleep quality — regular physical activity improves sleep, which is commonly disrupted in ASD
For children and adults: Exercare provides exercise physiology for both children and adults with ASD. Programs are adapted to the individual's age, sensory profile, communication style and current capacity. Sessions can be delivered at home, a local gym, hydrotherapy pool or outdoor setting.
What an ASD exercise physiology program looks like
Sessions are structured, predictable and consistent — which is particularly important for people with ASD who benefit from routine. Your exercise physiologist will:
- Conduct an initial assessment of motor skills, fitness, sensory preferences and NDIS goals
- Design a program using activities the individual finds motivating and regulating
- Use visual supports, schedules and clear instruction where needed
- Build gradually — introducing new activities within a familiar routine
- Coordinate with other team members including OTs, speech pathologists and support workers where helpful
Hydrotherapy for ASD
Warm water exercise is particularly effective for many people with ASD. The sensory properties of water — warmth, pressure, buoyancy — are regulating for many individuals, and the pool environment provides a consistent, predictable setting. Exercare can arrange hydrotherapy sessions across south-east Melbourne as part of an ASD exercise physiology program.
NDIS exercise physiology for ASD in south-east Melbourne
Exercare works with NDIS participants with autism spectrum disorder across south-east Melbourne. Plan-managed and self-managed participants welcome. We come to you.
NDIS funding for ASD exercise physiology
Exercise physiology for ASD is funded under NDIS Support Category 07 (Improved Daily Activities) for plan-managed and self-managed participants. Exercare is currently an unregistered NDIS provider — we accept plan-managed and self-managed participants. NDIS registration is on our current roadmap.
Progress reports provided after each session can support plan reviews and justify continued or increased Capacity Building funding.
