Exercise Physiology for Mental Health: Evidence, NDIS Funding and What to Expect

The evidence for exercise as a treatment for mental health conditions is robust and growing. For NDIS participants with psychosocial disability, and for people managing depression and anxiety, a structured exercise physiology program can be transformative — and it's funded through the NDIS and Medicare.

The mental health benefits of exercise — what the research shows

Exercise is now recognised as a first-line treatment for mild to moderate depression and anxiety, with effect sizes comparable to antidepressant medication for some populations. The mechanisms include:

  • Increased serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine — the same neurotransmitters targeted by antidepressant medications
  • Reduced cortisol and stress hormones
  • Neuroplasticity — exercise promotes growth of new neural connections, particularly in the hippocampus (reduced in depression)
  • Improved self-efficacy and sense of control
  • Social connection — particularly in structured, supervised exercise settings
  • Better sleep — which significantly affects mood and anxiety

NDIS and psychosocial disability: Mental health conditions that substantially affect daily functioning may qualify for NDIS access under the psychosocial disability stream. Exercise physiology is fundable under Capacity Building (Category 07) for NDIS participants with psychosocial disability where exercise supports improved daily function and participation.

What does exercise physiology for mental health look like?

Exercise physiology sessions for mental health are adapted to the individual's current capacity, which may fluctuate with their condition. Your EP will:

  • Start at a pace that feels manageable — not overwhelming
  • Build a consistent routine, which itself has therapeutic value for many mental health conditions
  • Use aerobic exercise preferentially — walking, cycling, swimming — as this has the strongest evidence for mood improvement
  • Incorporate resistance training to build physical health alongside mental wellbeing
  • Work flexibly — adjusting the session if the person is having a difficult day
  • Liaise with the person's mental health team where helpful

How is it funded?

  • NDIS — Capacity Building (Category 07) for participants with psychosocial disability. Plan-managed and self-managed participants accepted by Exercare.
  • Medicare CDM — depression and anxiety qualify as chronic conditions for a GP Management Plan. Your GP can refer you for up to five rebated sessions per year. Exercare bulk bills eligible clients.
  • Private health — most extras policies covering exercise physiology apply.
  • Self-funded — available without referral.
