The role of exercise physiology in WorkSafe rehabilitation
Work-related injuries often result in significant deconditioning — reduced strength, endurance, flexibility and functional capacity — even after the acute injury has resolved. Exercise physiology addresses this deconditioning directly, designing programs that rebuild physical capacity in a graded, evidence-based way that supports a safe and sustainable return to work.
An accredited exercise physiologist (AEP) working with WorkSafe clients focuses on:
- Restoring strength and endurance to meet the physical demands of the worker's role
- Improving mobility and flexibility affected by the injury
- Reducing pain and managing chronic pain where it persists beyond acute healing
- Graded exposure to work-relevant activities — building tolerance safely over time
- Functional capacity assessment — documenting the worker's current capacity relative to job demands
- Coordination with the treating team and case manager to align goals and progress reporting
For case managers and treating practitioners: Exercare provides comprehensive progress notes and functional capacity documentation for WorkSafe case management. We liaise directly with case managers and can participate in return-to-work planning meetings. Referrals to admin@exercare.com.au.
Common work-related injuries managed through exercise physiology
- Lower back injuries — the most common WorkSafe claim type. Graded exercise is the most evidence-backed treatment for chronic lower back pain
- Shoulder injuries — including rotator cuff injuries, impingement and post-surgical rehabilitation
- Knee injuries — meniscal injuries, ligament sprains and post-surgical return to work
- Upper limb conditions — repetitive strain injuries, tendinopathies and nerve compression syndromes
- Psychological injuries — exercise physiology provides structured activity that supports mental health recovery alongside psychological treatment
- Multi-trauma — complex injuries requiring a comprehensive graded rehabilitation approach
How does WorkSafe fund exercise physiology?
