What Does an Occupational Therapist Do?
Occupational therapists (OTs) are university-trained allied health professionals who help people of all ages participate in the activities of daily life — the occupations that give life meaning and purpose. For NDIS participants and aged care clients, OT focuses on maximising independence, safety and quality of life in everyday settings.
At Exercare, OT services will be delivered by accredited occupational therapists visiting clients at home, in aged care settings, and in the community across south-east Melbourne. All services will be mobile — we come to you.
What Exercare OT Will Include
Functional Capacity Assessments
Comprehensive assessments of daily living skills for NDIS planning, plan reviews and support applications.
Home Modifications
Assessment and recommendations for modifications that improve safety and independence at home — grab rails, ramps, bathroom modifications and more.
Assistive Technology
Assessment, prescription and trial of assistive technology equipment to support independence in daily life.
Daily Living Skills
Therapy targeting the skills needed for personal care, meal preparation, household tasks, and community participation.
NDIS Report Writing
Functional assessments and reports to support NDIS applications, plan reviews and support funding requests.
Sensory Processing
Sensory assessments and strategies for children and adults with autism, sensory processing disorder and related conditions.
Who Exercare OT is For
Exercare OT services will primarily support:
- NDIS participants (plan-managed and self-managed) requiring functional assessments, home modifications or assistive technology
- NDIS participants preparing for plan review who need updated functional capacity documentation
- Children and adults with autism spectrum disorder requiring sensory assessments and daily living support
- Aged care clients requiring home modifications and independence support
- People applying for the NDIS who need a functional capacity assessment to support their application
- Individuals with acquired brain injury, stroke, neurological conditions or physical disability
- Self-funded clients who want OT support while awaiting NDIS approval
How OT is Funded
Occupational therapy is funded under several NDIS support categories depending on the type of service:
- Support Category 07 — Improved Daily Activities: OT therapy for daily living skills, sensory processing and capacity building
- Support Category 05 — Assistive Technology: AT assessments and prescription reports
- Support Category 10 — Home Modifications: Home modification assessments and reports
- Aged care: OT is an approved service under Home Care Packages and the Support at Home program
- Self-funded: Available with no referral required, including for people awaiting NDIS approval
Exercise Physiology and OT Working Together
One of the key advantages of accessing OT through Exercare is that our exercise physiology and occupational therapy teams work side by side. For many NDIS participants, OT and EP address complementary goals — OT focuses on the skills and environment needed for daily life, while EP builds the physical capacity to perform those activities.
When both services are delivered by the same provider, communication between clinicians is seamless, goal-setting is coordinated, and your plan funding is used more efficiently. A single provider also means one point of contact for you, your support coordinator and your plan manager.
